Closet Organization Made Simple by Martha Stewart Living at The Home Depot Closet System

Jul 28

Martha, my friend, you had me at the word *simple*. 😉

Friends, if you need a new custom closet system, look no further than the aisles of your local friendly Home Depot. Because Martha Stewart Living has created this functional, beautiful and easy to install closet system that is going to rock your messy closet world.

And since someone mentioned "messy", what could possibly be more messy than the closet of a 9 (and a half) year old boy? Right or right?…

Actually, maybe not that bad at second glance. I've certainly seen worse. But this closet system wasnot working for this precious boy. Not completely his fault, however. *insert big finger pointing at me-self*

So let's start this story from the beginning. 11 shorts months ago when we moved to the new house, Aiden was supposed to be in this bedroom, which is up the hallway…

You can see the room is tight. I could barely fit myself in here to snap these photos. His closet was even smaller, and tucked behind the bedroom door…

But I did my best to add a system that would work for him / his habits.

The original bedroom plan was to reserve the old master as a future guest room. Therefore, when I added a closet organizer in there, it wasn't set up for someone to use on a daily basis. I arranged the closet with lots of shelves for scrapbooking materials, photos, and seasonal items, and added some hanging space for guests…

After a few weeks of Aiden living in the smallest room on this end of the house, we decided it was time to move him to the old master. Since he is the oldest kiddo around here, chances were high he would end up in this room anyway. So, up the hallway he went!

Over the next few months I realized the closet wasn't working well. I added the sliding closet doors back to all 4 bedrooms after the carpet was installed. But we all know how well sliding closet doors and kids co-exist = all bad. The closet system needed an upgrade and the doors had to come down.

Enter my generous and kind friends at Martha Stewart Living. They reached out to ask if I was interested in trying Martha's new closet system that is sold at The Home Depot. You know they didn't have to ask twice…or wait more than 2 minutes for my enthusiastic "yes!" response! I knew exactly where a new closet system would make a huge impact….in Aiden's room! Once I was on board for the job, the process was fun and easy!

First, I measured the interior of Aiden's closet then made my way over to the Martha Stewart Closets website…

Martha has made it incredibly easy to design the closet of your dreams. And don't be fooled by the name; closet systems aren't just for closets! The Martha Stewart Living at The Home Depot Closet System is versatile enough to be customized for any room in your home. Just choose a starter kit and customize it with components and accessories. All you do is use the online design tool, have the system delivered direct to you or buy it at your local Home Depot, then install. Done!

Here's 4 beautiful examples to drool over. Reach-in closet…

Walk-in closet…

Laundry room…

I'm loving this office!…

Since Aiden has a reach-in style closet, designing was simple. I entered one measurement – the closet width – and this general design popped up in the next window…

From there you can play around with your design, choose a closet finish and more. Aiden didn't need long hanging space, so I adjusted the design a bit, but not too much.

Once everything arrived, I got to work emptying the space and demo'ing the old system…

Installing the Martha Stewart Living at The Home Depot Closet System could not have been simpler too. Everything hangs off of one track, which you will need to secure into wall studs…

Yes, shocking – but this heavy, high-quality system hangs on one bar! With the track securely in place, I hung the panels, components and accessories…

The middle section was installed as well as the side panels, which are hidden away on the interior of the closet wings…

Next was adding the hanging rods, shelves and drawers…

All you need is a few tools – the instructions and screws are included for you!

Someone was very happy that evening!…

Now the fun part of the story begins…putting away his clothes and getting organized! With the new school year fast approaching, timing couldn't be better. This soon to be 4th grader is going to be getting ready in style each morning…

Did I mention he's the athlete of the family? He also have a very colorful wardrobe!

Let's take a closer look at how we organized this beautiful (I mean, cool) closet system. On the left…

Top rod has dress pants and dress shirts…

The shelf under is for hats and the bottom rod is for everyday casual t-shirts…

Since he's a big guy (sniff sniff) I upgraded his hangers to huggable hangers. No more slipping…

On the right side of the closet…

Top rod is for long-sleeve shirts and sweaters, which aren't in season at the moment…

And the bottom rod is his collection of sport jersey's…

In the mid-section, he decided to use the majority of the shelving to display some of his favorite sport items and trophies. The shelf on the bottom holds his day to day shorts, for ease of grabbing…

And the drawers? My favorite part of this system is the drawers. They are deep, roomy and open / close smoothly. Who doesn't love to peek inside a drawer to find this?…

Oh, is that just me? Hummm, I see you petting the computer screen!

Top drawer contains swim trunks and underwear…

Middle drawer contains socks (white, Nike elite collection, team socks)…

Bottom drawer holds pj pants and sweatpants / pants that are out of season…

A small selection of shoes is displayed on the closet floor along with his football pads and a laundry hamper, which is tucked away on the right side of the closet.

I've been working on wall hangings throughout the house (post coming soon!) and this project coincided perfectly with adding a few fun wall items to his space…

His name was hanging in his nursery and has a special place in mommy's heart. How time flies!…

Much of the sport memorabilia hanging or placed in his room is from his Grandfather, who attended Notre Dame, or trophies Aiden earned being an incredible football / baseball player…

Finally, our story ends with a happy before and after…

It's also pretty (I mean, cool!) and organized…

For fun, how's this for a true before and after? This is the bedroom when I purchased the house, before new paint and an awesome Martha Stewart Living at The Home Depot Closet System…

And now…

Amazing transformation! And I'm not done yet. Over the next few weeks the rest of Aiden's room is going to transform for the new school year…stay tuned for all of those details! It includes more building on my part, a new desk and a whole lot more! Can't wait!!

Thank you Martha Stewart Living and Home Depot for the opportunity to work with you on this project. This transformation would not have happened without you!
